A Minitown is being built

Faaborg in 1890

Faaborg Miniby is to depict the city of Faaborg as it looked around 1890. The buildings are sought to be built as typical of the period as possible according to the information that can be obtained about the individual building and its use.

Information about the individual houses is sought from the museum and the City Historical Archive, which often have photos and drawings of the old buildings. These are then supplemented with on-site measurements of the buildings that still stand in their original form and location. On the basis of the collected information, targeted working drawings have been drawn up, according to which the houses are built in the workshop.

Architect-designed houses

160 houses have been built for the opening in 2015, and there are also approx. 200 drawings of houses which are either under construction or which are not currently built.

All these drawings were made by Architect Aage Larsen, who was with the association from the beginning in 1992 until his death.

However, others have taken over the work with the houses for Faaborg MiniBy and that is how it is intended to continue.

Tools and materials

The tool is a commonly found hand tool. However, i.a. the masons in miniature format, as only very little mortar is used for each stone during the masonry.

Bricks and roof tiles are made with ceramic clay from Vedstårup Teglværk. The clay is pressed out into the desired profiles and cut into the right lengths. Stones and roof tiles are then dried for a period before being fired at 1100 degrees in a ceramic kiln.

For slate roofs, old natural slate stones are used, which are cut to one-tenth of their original size. The stones are then split, so that a very thin shifting stone is obtained, which fits in size and thickness to the Minibyen's houses.

Winter work

There is a lot of activity in the winter season, when individual parts and facades are manufactured.

When spring comes, the houses are moved to Faaborg Miniby.

Walls, roofs and building parts

From ceramic clay, the building guild itself produces and burns bricks and roof tiles for the houses at our mini brick factory.

The construction guild also has a lathe, and here, for example, brass door handle.

Doors and windows, on the other hand, are made of lead because it is more weather-resistant than wood, which rots and needs to be renewed.

The chimney

The chimney is the most important, as it puts the finishing touches and is done as the last thing before the house is moved to the site.

Incidentally, it is also the chimney that new members first become acquainted with - to gain practice, dexterity and knowledge of materials and building processes.

Existing and future houses

Faaborg Mini City consists of approx. 170 houses on the square.

The houses look as they did in 1890 and are currently located mainly on:

  • Church of the Holy Spirit

Church of the Holy Spirit

On Sunday 22 October, it was marked that the Church of the Holy Spirit in Faaborg Miniby was completed.

There is only a little fine-tuning of the terrain and the construction of the chapel and cemetery wall.

The selection was attended by approx. 100 visitors who, after a joint song, got a good introduction to the history of the church with a speech by pastor emeritus Ejner Fog-Nielsen, who if anyone knows the church's history. Horne's mixed choir then entertained with a few songs. Subsequently, there was a serving of something for the palate and an opportunity to look at the church and the Minibyen's other houses.
